Day 4: finding our way home

Song of the Day: Not Your Man

Activity of the Day: Gratitude

Stumbling through the dark forest together, we stay close. You can’t see your hand in front of your face.

We find trail markers one at a time, sometimes needing to backtrack and try again. Despite being lost in the woods, our friends are overwhelmingly positive.

“That’s ok! Let’s try again.”

That’s when we start seeing things we would never have seen without getting lost…

I’ll be scared, I’ll be falling apart

I’ll be round and round in circles from the start

I’ll be snared, I’ll be trapped in your heart

I’ll be thrashing through your garden from the start

– Not Your Man

Day 4: finding our way home

A rotting log is glowing in the dark. You see flowing green patterns running through its grooves.

“Man, am I really seeing that?”

“Whoah! There’s phosphorescence in the earth!”

You break through a bush and see some patterned lines on the ground.

“What the… IT’S THE ROAD! WE MADE IT!”

“Man, I can’t wait to stoke up that fire and make dinner.”

Now, we’re sitting around the fire, our backs against logs. Colin is shoving potatoes wrapped in foil into the embers.

Everyone is chatting and laughing. We all hush as someone pulls out an acoustic guitar.

It’s time to share our songs.

Not Your Man

Sometimes it’s hard to bite your lip and hold back from saying what you shouldn’t.

Especially when it’s what you really feel.

And sometimes a song is the best way to do that.

the story of Not Your Man

This is the part where you get to learn the story behind Not Your Man, its songwriting and lyrics, behind the scenes, and more…

Not Your Man Lyrics

Did I call you at the right time?

Over here it’s night time

Figured you would be awake

How’s your boyfriend?

Sorry that you’re fighting

Your mouth is so inviting

I promise that I’ll hold my tongue

When we hang out next spring

I bet he’ll be listening

Soon you’ll cross your own line in the sand

I’ve been up for days ‘cause I’m not your man

Start calling me when you’re sick of him

And I’ll understand

But you’re throwing me in the thick of it

And I’m not your man

Late night calls, biting frost

New York, you’ve got some teeth

Sink them into me

Say the right words, don’t act the wrong way

Show you that I’m here to stay

It’s only easy ‘cause you’re far away

Start calling me when you’re sick of him

And I’ll understand

But you’re throwing me in the thick of it

And I’m not your man

Start calling me when you’re sick of him

And I’ll understand

But you’re throwing me in the thick of it

And I’m not your man

I’m not your man

I’m not your man

I’ll be scared, I’ll be falling apart

I’ll be round and round in circles from the start

I’ll be snared, I’ll be trapped in your heart

I’ll be thrashing through your garden from the start

Soon You’ll cross your own line in the sand

I’ve been up for days cuz I’m not your man

Start calling me when you’re sick of him

And I’ll understand

But you’re throwing me in the thick of it

And I’m not your man

I’m not your man

I’m not your man, no

I’m not your man

Writing this song beginning to end

Today we go all the way in.

I created a video of the process of creating Not Your Man from beginning to end.

Yes, this is literally me writing the song for the first time.

It’s real scrappy. I hope it inspires you to know that this stuff isn’t all polished from the start!

And you can do it too 😉

Activity of the day

Gratitude

This is a short one. On a couple blank pages, write down things you are grateful for in your life. Just keep going. When you run out of the obvious stuff, get creative (eg. I’m grateful my neighbors accept me and never complain about me playing music. I’m grateful my dad is always excited to talk to me when I call). Whatever it is, just put it down.

This exercise rocks. If you’re ever feeling anxious or down, blend this into your morning pages. You might find yourself reconnecting with a cousin you haven’t spoken to in years. You might find that someone at work who is stressing you out is actually really awesome and can be your friend. And you might find that the small stuff doesn’t bother you because your life freakin’ rocks.

tomorrow

There’s a sudden chill in the air…

Does that mean… A SNOWDAY?
